ACLU makes demands of Colorado State University after tour involving Native American students

The American Civil Liberties Union is urging Colorado State University to take more action after a nervous parent called campus police regarding two Native American teens visiting campus earlier this year.

While the university has taken steps to address concerns, “these small steps do not obviate the need for more comprehensive measures,” according to a letter sent to the university Thursday by ACLU Colorado.

The letter's author, ACLU staff attorney for the Racial Justice Program Sarah Hinger, said CSU's existing policy on bias-based policing wasn't enough "to prevent bias based calls for service from directing law enforcement actions."

"The Gray brothers were confronted, detained and searched for by CSU police, leaving them humiliated, scared, and literally marginalized," Hinger wrote.
