If Daylight Savings is permanent, the sun will not rise until 8:30 a.m. in San Francisco during January.

That's a lot of kids going to school in the dark.

1. If they are going to make it permanent, it makes far more sense to make it standard time...

I do a long walk/hike with the pup and some other dog-walkers at 5AM every morning, summer, fall, winter, spring--no matter the weather. So, I'm used to it being dark in the AM. Even now, dawn doesn't really start to take until after 5:30AM. But, at least we all see dawn and get some sunshine if we stay out there long enough--even in the winter

Yeah, this seems ill-advised.

Back then, I was thinking there was some kind of nefarious force behind that push, something on the order of making it easier for corporations to track citizens' whereabouts.

it was dark when I walked to school and dark when I walked home. In the UK in late December, the sun rises at around 8am and sets by 4pm.

Also, we had to walk three miles in the snow every day, uphill both ways

What EarlG didn't mention, is those sunrise/sunset times are after the daylight savings time changes have been applied.

The converse is some nice looooong days in the summer where sunrise is ~04:30 and sunset ~22:00

Nothing like sitting out in the beer garden at 10pm with the sun just starting to go down.

When I visited in the winter many years ago, I'd forgotten what it was like to see the sun come up in the morning, barely get any distance above the horizon, and then disappear again in the middle of the afternoon

Actually, under our current national system, Arizona is on Mountain time during part of the year and Pacific time the remainder, but for Arizonans on the ground, that means never having to change our clocks. I love it. The effect is permanent daylight savings time. It's the best.
