This SF election is unlike any other in The City's history

States are the laboratories of democracy, as the saying goes, but San Francisco will be running its own city-sized democratic experiment come Nov. 5.

This will be the first election to take place since voters in 2022 approved Proposition H, which pushed mayoral elections and other citywide contests to coincide with presidential races beginning this year.

There’s widespread consensus that such election reforms — which have also taken place in San Jose and Los Angeles — help boost participation in down-ballot contests, as the lure of presidential politics draws in voters who might otherwise sit out local races.

What’s less clear, however, is which candidates and ballot measures will benefit from the beefed-up electorate.
