District 5 supervisor candidates battle over Tenderloin's future

Conditions in the Tenderloin have taken center stage in the race to elect the San Francisco neighborhood’s supervisor.

A little more than a month before Election Day, all five ballot-qualified candidates for supervisor in District 5 — which also includes Hayes Valley, Western Addition and the Panhandle, among other neighborhoods — met Wednesday at the main branch of the San Francisco Public Library to highlight their plans for office, particularly their proposed solutions for the problems in the Tenderloin.

“I believe that we need to have different leadership in order to solve the problems of the Tenderloin,” said Autumn Looijen. “I think the Tenderloin needs a little bit of tough love.”

There are five candidates: Looijen, who is best known for helping spearhead the 2022 San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education recall; Scotty Jacobs, the youngest candidate in the race; Allen Jones, a disability-rights activist and longtime Tenderloin resident; Bilal Mahmood, a former tech executive; and the incumbent Supervisor Dean Preston, The City’s only elected Democratic Socialist.
