District 9 candidates jockey to succeed Ronen as child care 'champion'
Early childhood educators and the San Francisco organizations representing them say they have a champion in District 9 Supervisor Hillary Ronen, who terms out this year.
Three candidates running to replace her shared how they would carry on her work at a Thursday forum hosted by Early Care Educators of San Francisco, a non-profit that connects educators with policy makers.
Much of the discussion focused on how nonprofit director Jackie Fielder, Mission community activist Roberto Hernandez and San Francisco Unified School District teacher Trevor Chandler the frontrunners in the District 9 race would use funds from 2018s Proposition C to put in place a universal child care system.
But the candidates also pitched ways to attract and retain qualified daycare providers to San Francisco. The City is facing a shortage of such workers thanks in large part to its high housing prices, which are pushing them to seek work elsewhere.
