S.F.'s Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club, finding fraud in its endorsements, votes anew
After San Franciscos influential Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club discovered dozens of phony votes influencing its endorsements in seven November races prompting the resignation of its president the club met Saturday to revote on endorsements and explain more about what happened.
Several ballots had been cast by people that were counted in our records as being present at our meetings as eligible to vote but when we did an audit, we realized several of them were either not eligible or not actually present, acting President Melissa Hernandez told dozens of club members who gathered at the San Francisco LGBT Center at 1800 Market St. or attended virtually to redo the vote in the disputed races.
This time, however, Hernandez said the Milk club issued voter verification codes and required people voting online to keep their cameras on during the entire meeting. She said the club had hired an attorney to oversee an investigation into the fraudulent votes and expects to release a report about what happened within 30 days.
Hernandez, a vice president, has served as acting president since Jeffrey Kwong, the Milk clubs president since last year, quit on Aug. 30 for what he called the credibility of the club and endorsed candidates.
