Visiting Los Angeles from San Francisco over the July 4th weekend. Any ideas of good places to stay?

We stayed in a great place right off the pier last year in Santa Monica. I want to stay there again, but I'm getting complaints because "We already saw that place. I want to go someplace new." Yes, we can launch to anyplace from the Santa Monica location, but, you know, I'm trying to keep peace here.

So we're two older adults in good hiking shape and a post-college guy. We like regular tourist stuff and nature hiking.

I'd appreciate any ideas - thanks!

Pasadena has you at the foothills of the Angeles National Forest - Eaton Canyon, Mount Lowe, Echo Mountain, etc
