Even modest ranch-type homes like ours are worth near a million $, on paper anyway. So, yeah, these McMansions are probably in the $5 mill +/- range. I hope their insurance covers this. It still won’t replace those priceless mementos we all have like old family pictures and documents, heirloom jewelry, family antiques, etc.

I see all this and look at the canyon behind us and shudder at losing everything to one of these wildfires. We’re in an area that isn’t as vulnerable, but if a big enough fire starts in the hills a couple of miles away, we could get overtaken. And it’s only going to get worse.

Climate change is here and it’s a monster already. I imagine California real estate value is going to eventually be deflated by the threat of these wildfires, much as low lying coastal real estate in places like Florida are starting to see insurance companies pulling out of the market and affecting property values.
