Relative of mine lives in No.Cal. and has PG&E and says gas rates up more than double this month?

Last edited Mon Jan 3, 2022, 10:48 AM - Edit history (4)

My relative doesn't have an account here and asked me to ask if anyone here uses PGE.com to monitor their usage and costs. That on their website you can look at

"energy usage details
" ...

and from there it will show you both electricity use and cost and gas use and cost, she says that her gas per therm cost was always around $2 for tier one and that this screen she is looking at now says it is $4.50 per therm, tier one.

This would be a more than double increase and she said her bill would be around $500 instead of $200 normally for the month at these rates. Also i guess there is a "projected bill" button and she says it says her bill will be $1089 for the month of January. Not sure what that is about.

On Friday she used 3.2 therms and is being charged $16.70 for that one day, but last month she used 3.2 therms a few times and each time the charge was $6.60.

It actually says on the page for this month that tier one gas is now $4.50 where it was $2.08 per therm up until now.

Wow, I hope this is incorrect for her sake and everyone else in CA. She is hoping anyone else when they look at this will see the same thing which will mean it is not only her and hopefully a glitch, because it would not be possible I would think for them to raise it more than double without PUC approval and there would be lots of news stories about it, etc.

So if anyone here uses the PGE site and can look at what theirs says, please do and report back.

EDIT January 3, 2022

She contacted PGE and they confirmed that the site does have a glitch, that they know about it (although the person at PGE who answered the phone did not know about it but she had her wait on the line and checked into it, took her a while she said but then came back and said yes, they are aware of this) and the bills will reflect the correct rates and not these inflated numbers shown on the site.

2. If they raised the natural gas price 250% wouldn't most people know about it?

When I google it I see stories about rate increases around 5% for 2022.

This would be 250%.

5. Looking on the PG&E website

the costs are nothing like that. There must be some sort of error. She should call customer service and get an explanation.

8. To see what she is seeing you would need to do the following:
Sun Jan 2, 2022, 07:31 PM
Jan 2022

log in to pge.com and to the right where it shows YOUR ACCOUNT and your current balance, you will see the following buttons

Energy Usage Details
Compare Bills
Home Energy Checkup
Ways to Save

Click on the first one, "Energy Usage Details" - at which point you see

Energy use, electricity and day by day graph, you can change it from USE to "Energy Costs" and it will show day by day your electric costs, if you change it to "Natural Gas" and keep it on COSTS, below the day by day graphs there you will see

Tier 1 - $4.50/therms
Tier 2 - $5.94/therms

Up until a few days ago she says those numbers were $2.08 per the tier 1 GAS but now shows $4.50...this is MORE THAN double and could not occur without it making a huge story and there is no story, so she is hoping:

a. it is a mistake and

b. YOUR account page shows the same thing...if you know what I mean

10. Confirming $4.50/Therm in San Francisco

Same here, Elliot.

Mine all of the sudden went up to $4.50/therm. I found you through a google search today to see what was up with the pricing increasing all of the sudden. I have been logging the daily therms for the past few days with pricing because I have guests staying in my home and have a brand-new Ecobee thermostat I just installed, so I am curious as to how it's fairing.

Example:

12/28/2021 - 2.1 Therms was $4.44 (Today it is showing $9.52 for 12/28)
12/29/2021 - 3.2 Therms was $6.65 (Today it shows that it's $14.27 for 12/29)
12/30/2021 - 2.1 Therms was $4.44 (Today it is showing $9.52 for 12/30)

It's showing my projected bill is going to be $481 and that it's $320 more than last year. Two days ago, it said it was projected to be $101.00. NOTE: My bill is cycle 12/13/2021-1/14/2022 and my condo (1,500 sq. ft) was vacant from 12/13-12/28.

11. Thanks SO MUCH for replying and looking into it, it is clear now this is not just

for one person but for everybody and must be a glitch. If their gas rate more than doubled, went up this much it would be HUGE news.

So it will be corrected eventually one would hope. Thanks again!

If you decide to contact them, please let us know what they say!

Oh, and you are saying you found this post that way, that is interesting. Google is amazing.

13. She called PG&E today and the Woman who answered did not know about it but she was put on hold

for a few minutes and she then came back and said that someone was aware of it, that it was wrong and it will be fixed and the billing will reflect the correct rates that are much lower, of course.

Thanks to everyone here for helping.

they said there was going to be a 9% increase on both electricity and gas. There have been many increases in recent years. I live in an 800 sq ft mobile home with dual pane windows and I'm getting $400 elecric bills. That's more than my car payment. My space rent is $485.

7. I have PGE for gas only, the billing is confusing

but there is a base line rate based on where you live (20 different climates in CA) then anything over 100% of that is bumped up to another rate until you get to 400% usage over the base line then there is big increase. Then the rates change based on what time of day. Peek usage hours rates are higher. Then they have different peek usage hours for summer and winter.
