Family remembers 14-year-old's dreams before LAPD shooting

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The 14-year-old girl who was killed by Los Angeles police last week — she was struck while hiding in a dressing room as an officer was aiming rifle rounds at a man suspected of assaulting customers at a clothing store and a bullet went through a wall — loved skateboarding and had dreams of becoming an engineer to build robots, her family said Tuesday.

Valentina Orellana-Peralta died in her mother's arms last Thursday at a Burlington store in the North Hollywood neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley.

Soledad Peralta, during a news conference Tuesday, said she and her daughter were in a dressing room shopping for Christmas clothes when they heard screaming. The teenager locked the door.

The teen's family stood outside the Los Angeles Police Department headquarters on Tuesday, next to a large photo of Orellana-Peralta wreathed in flowers, to call for justice and remember their daughter.

The bullet bouncing off the floor and through the wall is tragic but in this case I don’t know what else police could of done

He was armed with a bike lock apparently.

So a swarm of policemen, all carrying long guns, couldn't have cornered and subdued him, rather than shooting in a public store, near dressing rooms?

Sorry, no way in hell I'm buying that.

If he had a gun, and they saw him holding it, that would be different. Even a knife might help their case. But he had neither, and I don't think he was going to beat a bunch of armed cops with a bike lock.

Negligent Manslaughter. Cops always seem to shoot first, and offer apologies and thoughts and prayers later.

He was in the process of beating the third woman bloody

If the cops hadn’t stopped him he easily could of killed her, sure looked like he was trying to

They could have rushed up to him and either tased him, or just tackled him. He did not have a gun or a knife. They went to the option that's usually their first choice, and the result is a dead girl. The mother could have just as easily been killed as well.

We're not going to agree, so I'm done here.
