LA County reports nearly 10,000 new coronavirus cases Friday

Los Angeles County reported 10,000 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, Dec. 24, extending an alarming three-day rise that has spurred deep concern among public health officials and healthcare leaders across the region, who fear record caseloads by the year’s end.

The 9,988 new COVID-19 cases raised the county’s total since the pandemic began to 1,595,239 cases.

The 21 new deaths from COVID-19 posted Friday drove the county’s overall total to 27,533 to date.

The county won’t update its coronavirus metrics on Christmas Day.

The total of people hospitalized across the county jumped by nearly 50 overnight, to 850 people, according to the state’s database; 181 patients were in intensive care.
