Related: About this forumHow are you planning to vote in the recall?
Of course, I'm voting to keep Newsom, but I also have to pick a replacement. Stephanie Miller keeps talking about a talk radio host who sounds awful. I'd like to make sure it isn't him.

(96,586 posts)Which I dont think it will
I think the polls are messed up, and making false assumptions about low voter turnout, and not considering that every registered voter in California will get a postage paid envelope to mail their ballot. They dont have to go to the polls

(96,586 posts)Newsom isn't going to be recalled, but it doesn't hurt to have insurance.
I am very skeptical of the polls, and the media coverage of this recall.
One poll had the recall winning by 11 points, which was probably an outlier, since other pollsters are marking it as a dead heat, but I question even those.
I think assumptions are being made which have a good chance of being wrong.
The media keeps pushing the theme that republicans are more enthusiastic than Democrats, and that special elections "always" have low turnouts
The fact that 45% of the registered voters are Democrats, and something like 23% are republicans should provide an advantage to us. In addition, all registered voters will receive a postage paid mail in ballot, so the voter doesn't even have to go to the polls to vote. Just drop it in the mail box, or a drop box.
California insures all votes get counted
SoCalDavidS
(10,599 posts)I did not realize that, so I will definitely put in a vote for him on the 2nd question.
It's going to come down to turnout, so hopefully every eligible Democrat returns their ballot.

(57,630 posts)Number one is to say "NO" to the recall. If you check that box you're done. Put the ballot in the envelope and mail it back.
If you go to the second item and pick a name, you're playing into the recall republicans game. And you just might invalidate your own ballot since you check both reponses.
Check only the first item, the "No" on recall to keep Newson.
SoCalDavidS
(10,599 posts)I was led to believe you are voting on 2 different things. First the recall, and then who will replace Newsom if the recall passes.
They seemed mutually exclusive, meaning you could vote in the 2nd issue, just in case the 1st one passes.

(47,493 posts)Two separate votes. If there is a Dem running, I'd like to vote for them over Larry Elder. Stephanie Miller has worked in some proximity to him, and he sounds like a perv.

(226 posts)Recall ballots have two parts. Must voters vote on both parts of the recall ballot?
No. Voters can vote on either one or both parts of the recall ballot. A voter can vote no to the question of removing the current elected officer from office and also select a replacement candidate.

You don't have to vote on the second part. If you want him to stay, just vote "NO" on the recall.

I'm not willing to disinfranchise myself by not voting for a potential replacement. There are some that are less bad than others.

Mr.Bill
(24,804 posts)the state legislature could pass a law that any governor appointing anyone to Congress must pick someone from the same political party that vacated the office. Easy fix, actually. We have supermajorities in both houses of the legislature so the new Governor couldn't even make a veto hold up. In fact, he won't be able to do much of anything, except what republicans are good at. Shoot their mouths off and make fools of themselves. Long term, this will be the final nail in the coffin of the republican party in California.

(7,894 posts)Allowing 12% of the voters to decide to have a recall vote seems highly undemocratic and long past-due reform.
An ounce of prevention..
Why haven't they acted on that matter, since they are so powerful?
Mr.Bill
(24,804 posts)While I don't know exactly what that entails, it's probably more difficult than just passing a new law. Maybe we will find out soon.

(9,825 posts)Voting NO is a vote for Newsom therefore you shouldn't select another candidate.
If he loses, he will in all likelihood lose to the Republican front runner anyway. This is because Democrats have no clear front runner and that will split the vote across the candidates leading Larry Elder to a win. So it's basically a moot point.
And as you said....
"If Newsom was recalled, the state legislature could pass a law that any governor appointing anyone to Congress must pick someone from the same political party that vacated the office. I've decided that I'm not going to choose a replacement. Either he beats this or we get a pretty ineffectual Republican for just over a year.
Does that sum it up or am I still not getting this?

(57,630 posts)you want to keep Newsom. And FYI: Saying to vote "NO" on recall and you're done is not disinformation as it's true if you want to keep Newsom.
I give you that you're right about one can check a candidate on the second item on the ballot. I found that out later. But I still say the less people who go along with the tricky ballot and mark for someone else, the more chance there is of someone who gains only 15% or 20 or 25% of the vote can become governor because if not enough people vote "NO", the candidate with the most votes on Item 2 on the ballot wins. Remember, the whole thing is a republican-ginned up effort. The best thing to do if you're a Democrat and want to keep the Democratic governor is to vote for Newsom by voting "NO" on Item 1 on the recall ballot.
Here's another perspective of it.

(3,286 posts)I'm talking worst case scenario- a 'yes' outcome. But the only 'silver lining' being that the repukes split their vote more than we do so at least we end up with a Democratic governor anyway.
I don't want to change a tire, but I carry a flat.
Your opinion on voting no is, of course, completely valid; but you stating and not retracting factual inaccuracies can't stand unchallenged IMHO.
Regards.
Plus it would be a small consolation to watch Republican heads explode if the recall passes and we still have a Democratic governor.

You might want to look at Kevin Paffrath, a Democrat, since he is within the MOE of the leading alternatives.
Of course we are all voting NO on question 1, which if the recall fails makes question 2
irrelevent
brush
(57,630 posts)as that's what the recall republicans want voters to do. It's a completely unfair recall process as there are so many other candidates on the ballot, someone with 20 percent or less of the voters may become governor.
If you check "NO", again, you're done. Just mail the ballot back.
Vote no and were done.
brush
(57,630 posts)you might cancel out your ballot. It's tricky how these republicans have set up the ballot.
I mean if you want Newsom to stay, why give a vote to someone to replace him? It's tricky.
