Related: About this forumRename the Andrew Jackson Post Office (San Diego)
I got on the news three times last week.
CBS8, NBC7 and KUSI did stories on this little idea I had after asking people on NextDoor why my neighborhood post office in Rolando, San Diego is named after the guy responsible for the trail of tears.
City Council President Georgette Gomez even sent a letter of endorsement. I think we're on to something.
She's running for retiring Rep. Susan Davis's seat in my district (CA-53), so if she wins I feel confident that she will propose a bill to actually change the name.
Andrew Jackson owned slaves and was arguably responsible for more atrocities than any other president. He was also the first Democratic president. I've heard that renaming a post office is usually the least controversial legislation, but does anyone else think this is controversial among democrats because he was a Dem? For any other reason?
With all that's going on with all the monuments being removed and names being changed after the killing of George Floyd, I think it just makes sense.

I almost forgot to add a direct link to the petition. Please do sign and share if it interests you. It's a federal building and it requires the entire House to vote on it, so you don't have to be a local to have a voice about this.

(11,095 posts)I wrote to some Tribal Chairmans in the area. Other than that, I'm not sure what else to do to convince the House to make it happen.
