Saline County is now experiencing what we did in Craighead-the entire fascist freak show. A word of warning-these people will not just go away, there is no compromise that will appease them, and nothing they say is true. They want power and control and they have to be defeated.

Give people like Dan Sullivan, Mary Bentley and the kooks they’ve whipped into a frenzy an inch and they’ll be all our rulers. When we were warned that “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty” these are the people we were warned to be on guard against.

This is the same fight that occurs all over the world and throughout history whenever freedom is being menaced-they go for the books, the librarians, and the teachers. It’s about banning ideas and stopping anyone from having a glimpse into the stories of “undesirables”.

For those who have seen the book banners win in your communities, as we have in ours, you are right to be angry. Take that anger and use it to register and mobilize voters. Make sure they know the names of those politicians and turn them out in the elections to come.

Hope is stronger than fear. Love is stronger than hate. Freedom and democracy are greater than fascism. So keep going, no matter how dark it may seem. Those who would take freedom from us want us to give into despair and quit. They can’t really win unless we do.

My grandfather stood guard over Nazi POWs in WW2 down at Camp Robinson. The people held there started by banning books. They did not stop there. It never stops there.

In Jonesboro, they started attacking a Pride display. When that didn’t work, they attacked sex education books for teaching about sex…Then they cherry picked and misrepresented every novel they could think of. Then they lied to people about the finances of the library.

Close libraries and public schools, attack teachers, librarians, and every minority group there is and we won’t stay free for long. That’s the path to freedom’s death, but it’s not too late to turn back.

Whatever damage these people do, we will eventually undo. This is not a new fight-it’s one with precedents to learn from. But it is better that we stop them now, before they do anymore damage than they already have.

Yes, the book banners wrap what they’re doing up in their sex obsession and cherry pick pages and quotes to try and scare people. They have to lie and scare people to get what they want after all. Don’t fall for it.
