State agencies prepare for more furloughs

In letter, Beebe orders programs that rely on federal funds to shut down
By Michael Wickline

“The state of Arkansas simply does not have the resources to continue to cover the costs of federal programs and cannot put state program matching funds in jeopardy,” Beebe wrote. “Therefore, I am notifying all agency directors that as of Friday, October 11, any programs or employees that are wholly or partially dependent on federal funding and cannot draw on those federal funds during the shutdown are to be suspended until its conclusion.”

Beebe underlined the word “any” for emphasis.

There were 442 furloughed state employees as a result of the federal government shutdown on Tuesday, state Department of Finance and Administration officials estimated.

Richard Weiss, the department’s director, said Wednesday that the number of furloughed state employees could increase to between 1,000 and 2,000, starting Monday.

Surely this will bring defeat to "our" crop new teabaggers. I'm ready for sanity to prevail again.
