Progressive groups in Arizona, fresh off Democratic wins over the last two cycles that represent a new high-water mark after a generation of Republican control, are exerting pressure on Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, one of the few Democrats who have maintained a steadfast opposition to reforming or removing the filibuster.
As long as the filibuster is in place, its going to be impossible to see progress on voting rights, on immigration, on so many topics that affect people in Arizona, said Emily Kirkland, who heads Progress Arizona, the group responsible for projecting anti-filibuster messages on buildings and monuments in Phoenix, Tempe and Tucson in recent months. Were really just trying to send a message to her that this is the way to cement the direction that Arizona has gone in, is by passing commonsense policies.
So far, Sinema is unmoved. Earlier this month, she told The Wall Street Journal she remained opposed to erod[ing] the rules.

(4,633 posts)I will never be able un-see that little flouncy-curtsey thing she did with the minimum wage vote. Then her office claimed folks were being sexist for calling her out on it.

Now I will work my ass off for her primary challenger, no matter who that will be...

(1,214 posts)it was that she tapped McConnell's shoulder as she walked past him to cast her vote, in hopes that he'd turn around and see her vote "no."
I can't imagine that she'll get the Democratic nomination when she runs again. But maybe she's planning to run as a Republican.

(3,131 posts)I dont think historically the filibuster was used for most legislation. At least by Obama that changed and everything of substance is blocked.
I believe part is because what they are blocking is supported by most Americans and they dont want the floor vote showing they are against it.
Rules dont exist in a vacuum outside of what they control. If that object becomes uncontrollable you have to change the rule.
