It has been a year and a half since I stopped driving. The bus service here in Tucson is dependable and scheduled frequently enough that my weekly shopping trips are convenient. With the intense heat here in Tucson, It is advisable to do errands as early as possible.
This morning I had finished my shopping about 9 am, and was waiting for my bus. It might have been 94 deg. I had about ten minutes until my bus was due, so I had a cigarette. The traffic going past was typical, mostly passenger vehicle and quite a few work trucks. A Tucson Police traffic enforcement went by, in the far lane of a six lane road. (Swan, north of Grant).
About two minutes later, a white full size pickup truck with a camper-shell pulled up in the lane next to the bus stop. The red and blue lights flashing from behind the chrome grill caught my attention.
Now I'm cycling through my memory, trying to remember what offences in my past might have resulted in this situation.
As the truck stops, a law enforcement officer gets out of the passenger door. I see he is in full tactical gear, not camouflage, but dark green clothes, bullet resistant vest emblazoned with the bold insignia "BOMB SQUAD."
He took a cursory look in the trash can and I asked him what was going on. He was nonchalant and just said "A routine check."
He got back in the truck and before he closed the door, I wished him a quiet day.
He said, "Thanks."
what is going on? Californians going berserk?

(2,778 posts)Yesterday I was there, to pick up cat litter at PetSmart in the strip mall on the southeast corner.
In front of the Trader Joe's was an enormous SUV flipped on its side, with people milling about, trying to extract the folks trapped inside. I cannot think of any way that something that size would get capsized in a parking lot.
There were soon more cops, firemen and paramedics than one would believe possible in that parking lot!
