Arizona Democrats give Elizabeth Warren edge on first night of primary debates

Sen. Elizabeth Warren was the early favorite of several of the more than 100 Arizona Democrats who gathered Wednesday to watch the first part of the two-night Democratic presidential primary debate on a big screen at Harkins Theaters in Tempe Marketplace.

Warren, D-Mass., went into the debate with a significant lead in the polls over Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-Texas, who were cited by NBC debate hosts as being the next highest-polling candidates.

Several people arriving at Theater 9 with popcorn and drinks in hand identified themselves as fans of Warren.

“She has a plan for everything,” said Erin Rugland, who said Warren’s tax on families making more than $50 million, a policy the progressive senator has christened the “ultra millionaire tax,” and her plans to break up big banks and tech companies were needed reforms.

1. Going into this

on paper it looked like a slam dunk for her. Being as nobody took even a hint of a swipe against her, that guaranteed her win. She got a lot of speaking time in the first half, not so much in the second, but she got her points and her personality across. The only disadvantage for her was that she did not get a chance to swat away one of the lesser candidates, and it remains to be seen how she will handle this in future debates.

2. It may be best that she didn't go on the attack.

De Blasio and Castro both went after O'Rourke so they hurt her closest rival. O' Rourke did not defend himself aggressively and he will need to show more strength if he is going to keep up with the remaining candidates.

If Warren had shown any aggressiveness, then the media would have pummeled her in the coverage.

3. Not necessarily

Sen. Klobuchar went after Gov. Inslee on abortion, and I don't recall the media saying anything negative about that.
