EJ Montini, Arizona RepublicOpinion: She not only embraced President Trump during the campaign, but she failed even to mention Sen. McCain's when speaking about a bill named in his honor.
And even if that were acceptable, which it shouldnt be, there is that thing McSally did NOT do after Trump signed the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019.
The president, when he signed the bill, did not mention McCains name.
A petty snub.

(43,049 posts)Not only does it get her in the Senate now, it positions her for re-election as an incumbent, avoiding a primary war and giving her a huge head start against any Democratic challengers. Challengers who will likely wear themselves out in primary battles.
The only kink in this plan is Trump screwing things up so badly that even if he doesn't leave office one way or the other, his coattails will be the toilet paper stuck to his shoe.
Who else would he appoint, anyway?

(15,602 posts)but he was fully retired from public service and he agreed to be a place holder temporarily until the Governor could find someone else. I think he made a commitment to stay through the rest of 2018. McSally is hoping Ducey will pick her in January so she can be an incumbent going into the next election. That was McCain's seat. He was reelected in 2016, which means the term is finished in 2022. Don't know if she will have to run before then. Sometimes they call special elections (as they did in Minnesota for Al's seat).

(12,441 posts)Because McCain didn't retire earlier, they didn't have enough time for a special election this cycle.
Kinda pissed at McCain about that...
