MARICOPA COUNTY WOMAN INDICTED FOR ALLEGED ELECTION FRAUD INVOLVING FORGED BALLOT INITIATIVE SIGNATURES

In a development that highlights the ongoing challenges in ensuring election integrity, a Maricopa County woman has been indicted on allegations of forging signatures for a ballot initiative. Michele Lee Brimmer, born in November 1972, is charged with one count of Fraudulent Schemes and Practices, a Class Five Felony; four counts of Forgery, Class Four Felonies; and nine counts of False Signature on a Petition, Class One Misdemeanors. According to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, Brimmer's actions involved submitting fraudulent signatures to qualify Proposition 139, the Right to Abortion Initiative, for the 2024 ballot.

While working as a signature gatherer, Brimmer allegedly submitted multiple petitions containing signatures that did not match those of the individuals purported to have signed them. After being investigated, it was discovered by officials that several people denied having signed the petitions or recognizing the signatures attributed to them. "I want to make it clear that the number of signatures we are talking about would not have made a difference as to whether this proposition got on the ballot," stated County Attorney Rachel Mitchell, as reported by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

The indictment seeks to reaffirm the value of each individual's genuine participation in democratic processes. "That said, we are talking about a case that involved fraudulent signatures placed on an election petition. That is a crime, and it undermines public trust in elections," Mitchell added, signifying the importance of upholding the law to maintain the integrity of elections, as per a report by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

This case highlights Maricopa County officials' dedication to protecting the electoral system from fraud while respecting the legitimate outcome of the vote. "It will not be tolerated and those who engage in such conduct will be held accountable," Mitchell stated, reinforcing the county's stance on election-related crimes, as noted by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. Michele Lee Brimmer, like all defendants, is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
