Brittney Griner joins early voting horseback ride to south Phoenix polls
On Tuesday afternoon, just one week before Election Day, a caravan of Phoenix residents rode out on horseback to deliver their ballots early, accompanied by live banda a popular Regional Mexican subgenre paying homage to the Mexican ranch communities of Arizona.
Special guests Mercury's Brittney Griner, actress Mishel Prada and actor Jose Velazquez joined the crowd of over 20 charros on horseback and dozens of citizens during the second edition of Poder Latinx's Cabalgata hacia las Urnas (riding on horseback to the polls), celebrating the national day of early voting and mobilized the Latino community to exercise their right to vote in Arizona.
With early voting well underway since the beginning of October both by mail and at active polling sites the group of charros and enthused citizens and non-citizens parted from south Phoenix's Rancho Corona. They made their way to the Tolleson Civic Center to drop off their ballots.
According to Nancy Herrera, state director of Poder Latinx in Arizona, the event encouraged community members to exercise their right to vote. And if they couldn't exercise their right to vote the case for many mixed-status families they were encouraged to bring those who could with them.
