City of Tucson set to rename Christopher Columbus Park

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - The city of Tucson has proposed a name change for Christopher Columbus Park.

The city said it wants to change it to Danny Lopez Park, to honor a respected teacher and elder in the Tohono O’odham community.

The park was called Silverbell Lake Park until 1990 when it was changed to Christopher Columbus Park.

“I thought it was brilliant they chose (him),” Tucson councilman Kevin Dahl said of Lopez. “Later on in my career, I got to know him as a Tohono O’odham holder of knowledge, elder, educator.”

Others in education have felt his impact as well.
