Progressives target Nowakowski's controversial past in Phoenix council election
Political progressives are attacking Michael Nowakowski, the former Phoenix Councilman running for re-election to the City Council this November in an effort to help their preferred candidate, Sen. Anna Hernandez.
Signs accusing Nowakowski of corruption and denouncing LGBTQ rights popped up this week throughout southwest Phoenix, where he and a slate of challengers are running for the District 7 City Council seat. Candidates include Nowakowski, Hernandez, former State Rep. Marcelino Quinonez and incumbent Councilman Carlos Galindo-Elvira. They're all Democrats, and the race is technically non-partisan.
The attacks refer to comments Nowakowski made objecting to same-sex marriage in 2016 and conflict-of-interest investigations that hampered his years at City Hall before he was termed out in 2021.
