ASU police chief on paid leave after complaints about handling of protests

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — Arizona State University’s police chief, Michael Thompson, has been placed on paid administrative leave following a slew of complaints about his actions and handling of protests that took place at the Tempe campus in late April.

A university spokesperson confirmed to Arizona’s Family that current assistant chief John Thompson has been named as the acting chief in the meantime.

“The ASU Office of General Counsel is directing a review of actions surrounding the establishment and removal of an encampment on the Alumni Lawn. Upon completion of the review, ASU will provide an update on its findings,” the statement concluded.

More recently, reports have surfaced that four ASU students had their hijabs forcibly removed by the department during those demonstrations.
