So, my advice is three things: a good strobe light flashlight to blind them, pepper spray, and a whistle. Sure you could carry a bat, but I want to deter, not fight. And loud noise does scare off a lot of animals, including off-leash dogs and the occasional group of coyotes encountered in the wee morning.
The bat might be necessary against the Javelina, though, I suppose. I'd prefer my heavy-duty bear-spray if it came to that.

(7,962 posts)They are really, really protective of their young. I had one smaller size one staring my dog down as we walked toward the front door and thought it was going to attack. As we went inside two little ones crawled out from under her. That mom was ready to fight. What I was told that if you do get into a fight with one and there are others nearby, they will all come after you.

(2,779 posts)I used to manage one of the many restaurants in that neighborhood. The dumpsters there made it a prime foraging spot for javelinas, coyotes and ravens. Taking out the trash at any hour, we were bound to meet at least one scavenger.
I was fond of the ravens.
