Republican candidates for Arizona governor blast proposal for cameras classrooms pushed by Kari Lake
Two top candidates for the Republican nomination for Arizona governor are calling an idea to put cameras inside K-12 classrooms a dangerous expansion of government surveillance, leading to an early policy clash among GOP hopefuls.
Candidate Matt Salmon said in a Monday interview that his opponent Kari Lake's proposal to monitor teachers was a "knee-jerk reaction" that was "very poorly thought out." Candidate Karrin Taylor Robson said Lake was following the lead of communist China and its "army of cameras used to monitor and compile a massive digital profile against its own citizens."
Lake, the former Fox 10 news anchor, who also is seeking the Republican nomination for governor, said in early November that she would support cameras in classrooms, echoing conservatives like Fox News commentator Tucker Carlson and U.S. Rep. Bob Good, R-Va.
Salmon and Taylor Robson both said Monday that parents deserve greater transparency when it comes to their children's education. But that should come via in-person involvement, they said.
