What I like to call the 'Mad Men' episodes..

Like Martin Sloan in "Walking Distance" or Gart Williams in "A Stop at Willoughby," retired ad man Mike Lynn found refuge in The Twilight Zone.

It's very telling that two episodes of in The Twilight Zone's first season—"Walking Distance" and "A Stop at Willoughby"—centered around harried advertising executives yearning for simpler times.

"Walking Distance" in particular served as an autobiographical reflection of creator Rod Serling's nostalgia for his upbringing in Binghamton, New York amid the stresses of a television writing career. Aside from turning out scripts and overseeing production on a regular basis, Serling was also expected to appease network execs and sponsors alike. You can't really blame the guy for getting a little wistful about the carefree past.

And just like overburdened company men Martin Sloan (Gig Young) and Gart Williams (James Daly) found refuge from their hectic lives in the Twilight Zone, so too did real-world advertising professional Mike Lynn. "I consider Rod Serling one of the greatest writers of all time," he recently told SYFY Wire over a Zoom call. "Not just television, of all time." ...
