The best Bewitched character was Uncle Arthur. Only appeared in 10 of the 254 episodes but I remember it like he was in every other goddamn one. Such was the genius of Paul Lynde.

The show’s producer would later admit that the entire theme of the show - a woman who has to hide who she really is to avoid persecution from bigots - was intended as a direct allegory to what gays and lesbians had to endure. At least 7 recurring characters were played by LGBTQ actors. And yet, most of the general public never caught on.

I had never been a big fan of hers, but I was gratified to read that about her.

I would also point out that Bewitched was often compared to I Dream of Genie, but the two shows were actually quite different. Genie was always causing problems that her “master” had to bail her out of, whereas Samantha was usually fixing problems caused by others.

Paul Lynde, Alice Ghostly, Agnes Morehead and Marion Lorne (Uncle Arthur, Esmerelda, Endora and Aunt Clara) made that show!

And of course the lovely and talented Elizabeth Montgomery. Who could resist that nose twinkle? Not me! My first tv crush.
