- Benjamin David Goodman (May 30, 1909 – June 13, 1986) was an American jazz clarinetist & bandleader, known as the "King of Swing". From 1935 until the mid-1940s, Goodman led one of the most popular swing big bands in the U.S. His concert at Carnegie Hall in NYC on Jan. 16, 1938, is described by critic Bruce Eder as "the single most important jazz or popular music concert in history: jazz's 'coming out' party to the world of 'respectable' music."

Goodman's bands started the careers of many jazz musicians. In an era of racial segregation, he led one of the 1st integrated jazz groups, his trio & quartet. He continued performing until the end of his life while pursuing an interest in classical music. Early years...

Always loved Artie's take, but with Helen's vocals and such a killer arrangement, Benny's is better imho.

In his 1935–1936 radio broadcasts from Chicago, Goodman was introduced as the "Rajah of Rhythm".

9. That's a lot of service, very special. Dad was Army WW2, younger bro. Coast Guard. Dad was an artillery Lieut.

Mom joined him in NC for training and the Southwest - TX, NM which she liked. Then he was off to the Rhineland, 7th Army and the Occupation around Munich, Bavaria. Among the few mementos we have is an SS patch he obtained.

Mom told us about dancing to Tommy Dorsey and Glen Miller, great times!

10. Our parents had similar stories . Mom packed parachutes at an Air Force base. Dad was in the Army in the Pacific.
