I don't see lip syncing (in the first minute), in fact, I am ehhh 90% sure it is not. :)

They're lipsynching to the AM radio cut.
We miss that great organ solo!
I saw a taping of a couple shows and it was 100% live.
I didn't remember The Midnight Special doing mime versions. Always thought all of it was live.

(50,740 posts)2. Hmm, I wasn't paying close attention.
Looked like it was from the pilot show in 1972. I assumed those were live performances but maybe not.

There are several times Russ is way off mic with no change in volume.
As they come out of where the organ solo should be, Rod isn't doing those high triplets until around the 3rd one.
Finally, it fades out as an entire mix. Sting's Blue Turtle band couldn't have done that & that was the most skilled band I've ever seen.
At least the instruments were plugged in, but it's certainly the studio recording.

(50,740 posts)5. Is this not the single version from the early 70's?
If it is then the lead singing on the Midnight Special tape I shared is not the same. I would have to spend more time analyzing the tracks to come to a conclusion regarding the instruments and backing vocals (you may be right in that regard). But on the Midnight Special you only need to go 54 seconds to ..."make it" to easily tell the difference from the studio recording as far as the lead singing. And the lead singer is either the best lip syncer of all time or he is singing on the tv show tape.
