Waiting for 2 quilts to come back from the quilt shop, then all I have to do is bind the edges. One is the thirds of the family quilts, the other is the blue willow plate quilt. Started a purple circle quilt. need 130 blocks, so far I have made about 40. Yesterday I rec'd my order of Day of the Dead fabric, going to make a very colorful quilt.

(15,632 posts)To make four t-shirt quilts. I've divided them up into four categories - one of them just being funny t-shirts, and that one will have four different panels from shirts that say, "Bite Me." I'm quite proud of that.

(15,632 posts)Unfortunately, some of the design will be covered by the borders I'm going to put around each one (1/4 inch), but as funny t-shirt quilt will be my largest, I'm sacrificing a little bit so I can keep all the sections at 12.5 inches square.
I also have shirts I wore during undergrad (Pittsburg State in Kansas), living in Oklahoma (doing some grad work at Oklahoma State and living in Tulsa), locations (places I've visited), and events. The events quilt will look like all I go to are MST3K live shows, Cirque du Soleil, Weird Al concerts, and Dia de los Muertos events.

(2,681 posts)We used to sew all the time using thrift store items. We sewed using t-shirts, old denim and old flannel. In fact I made myself a flannel patchworks skirt about 6 weeks ago. I've been wearing every where, it I so warm. I used all blue and grey plaids. I made a quilt top from men's dress shirts. My daughter liked it, so I gave it to hear to quilt.
I learned to sew when I was 8 or 9, then went to sewing school when I was 13. Sewed all my clothes, clothes for my girls, even made parkas when we lived in Alaska. In the 1980's my daughter had a women clothing line and 1 sewed many of her samples. I did not quilt until I was 74 and the first quilt I made was an Ohio Star with a 6-inch block. I would never do that again, each block had 21 pieces. I like the circle pattern because there is only 8 pieces in each block.
I don't like to use kits, half the fun is working out your own design and picking the colors and fabric you want to use. I keep a tablet of 1/4" grid paper on hand to work out my patterns. I always sew up a few blocks to see how it will look because sometimes the pattern will be different from what you visualize.

(15,632 posts)So I could sew my own vests. I'm a children's entertainer - balloon twisting and magic - and I didn't want to keep relying on others for making them or buying them and not being what I wanted. Plus, I could give myself extra pockets and even a few small hidden places where I could keep a small magic prop that I could grab surreptitiously. I now have made over 60 vests for general performing, holidays, local/state sports teams (KC Royals, Chiefs, KU Jayhawks), Chilis because I twist balloons at two of their restaurants, etc.
I don't pay a lot of attention to sports, but I wish I had listened to my sister who told me that the Chiefs would be going to the Superbowl this year. I would have started sewing things like table runners kid vests, teddy bears, etc. using Chiefs fabric to sell in January. So I'm going to do that this year with not just Chiefs but other teams. Joann went apeshit and bought dozens of bolts of Chiefs fabric that they couldn't get rid of so they heavily discounted them so I have an entire bolt of 15 yards to get through by next year.

(2,681 posts)Have stocked my pantry. Making a final run to the market for fresh fruit and my favorite yogurt tomorrow. Then staying in and working on my purple quilt. I bought some fabric to make a Day of the Dead quilt, all bright colors - fiesta, Frida Kahlo, serape patterns. Not sure of my design yet. I kinda of have an idea of how I want it to look. Will probably make a few sample blocks as soon as the purple quilt is done. (maybe sooner)

(2,681 posts)Sidetracked sewing masks, but for now out of elastic, so back on the purple blocks. Have about 108 blocks sewn, need 130 total. Hope to get all the blocks sewn, then pressed and squared up this week. Then ready to sew together. If my elastic comes in, will set aside the quilt and go back to making masks. Anyway I go, I will soon be done with this quilt top.
I have learned one thing, purple is a hard color to work with.

(2,681 posts)I found out when trying to match the prints to the various shade of purple solids. My sister just gave me a tub of fabric with some purples. I still have some purple fabrics left over, so I may take a another go at a purple quilt, this time a different pattern. Going to wait to see how this quilt looks when it comes back from being quilted.

(26,281 posts)You could always work them into a scrap row quilt....overpower the purple with other colors maybe?
