TCM Schedule for Thursday, May 23, 2024: Frank Sinatra / Betty Garrett B-Day Tribute / George Miller Guest Programmer

Betty Garrett (May 23, 1919 – February 12, 2011) was an American actress, comedian, singer and dancer.

Garrett's career began in the Borscht Belt, where she had the opportunity to work with Danny Kaye, Jerome Robbins, Carol Channing, Imogene Coca, and Jules Munshin. A variety of stage performances that included Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre and Martha Graham's dance company led to Broadway, where she made her debut in the 1942 revue Of V We Sing.

Her performance in the mid-40s Broadway play Call Me Mister won critical acclaim, and attracted the attention of Louis B. Mayer. Mayer signed Garrett to a one-year contract with MGM.

She made her film debut portraying nightclub performer Shoo Shoo O'Grady in Big City (1947). Mayer renewed the contract and Garrett appeared in the musicals Words and Music, On the Town, Take Me Out To The Ball Game, and Neptune's Daughter.

All five MGM films are airing on TCM today.

Garrett later became known for the roles she played in two prominent 1970s sitcoms: Archie Bunker's politically liberal neighbor Irene Lorenzo in All in the Family and landlady Edna Babish in Laverne & Shirley. In later years, she appeared in television series such as The Golden Girls, Grey's Anatomy, Boston Public and Becker, as well as in several Broadway plays and revivals.
