It's on at an hour (early Wednesday) when few us are bound to be awake, but you owe it to yourself to see Allison Anders' Gas Food Lodging, a one-of-a-kind look into the lives of three women living in the American Southwest.
And for more family upheaval, but from another era, check out Four Daughters this morning.
And damn, Now, Voyager and The Unsuspected are both on! And Casablanca! It's a veritable Claude Rains-O-Rama for the actor's birthday!

(6,346 posts)He had a way of making the most rascally characters loveable, like Captain Renault in Casablanca (1942). On paper, the Captain is a despicable man, who takes bribes and extorts sex from frightened refugees. And yet, and yet. When he says, "I'm shocked! Shocked to find that gambling is going on here!", we grin at his outrageousness.
I loved his character in Now, Voyager (1942), Dr. Jaquith. He's a no-nonsense psychiatrist, who is very strict with Bette Davis' character, Charlotte Vale. And yet, and yet. He gets that twinkle in his eye and lets her go off to do things that don't fit the standard of care, because he is practical and willing to try something different.
I guess you can tell I'm a Claude Rains fan!

(17,139 posts)It's the supporting players, Rains chief among them, who command attention in Casablanca. The use of humor and ambiguity and above all comic timing work brilliantly.
And the man himself fascinated me in Aljean Harmetz's book on Casablanca. We lost him too soon; what a lot of stories he had left in him!
