ALL TIMES EST7:00 AM Jewel Robbery (1932) Synopsis: A jewel thief falls for a tycoon's wife in Vienna. D: William Dieterle. William Powell, Kay Francis, Hardie Albright, Henry Kolker, Spencer Charters, Alan Mowbray, Helen Vinson. Lubitsch-like bauble with wealthy, married Francis (who aches for excitement in her life) being captivated by debonair burglar Powell. Breathlessly paced, witty and charming. Screenplay by Erwin Gelsey, based on a play by Ladislaus Fodor.
8:15 AM The Match King (1932) Synopsis: An ambitious young man corners the market on matches, then faces the destruction of his empire. Dir: Howard Bretherton Cast: Warren William , Lily Damita , Glenda Farrell .
9:45 AM The Purchase Price (1932) Synopsis: A night-club singer on the lam becomes a farmer's mail-order bride.
Dir: William A. Wellman Cast: Barbara Stanwyck , George Brent , Lyle Talbot .
11:00 AM So Big (1932) Synopsis: A farmer's widow takes on the land and her late husband's tempestuous son.
Dir: William A. Wellman Cast: Barbara Stanwyck , George Brent , Dickie Moore D: William A. Wellman. Barbara Stanwyck, George Brent, Dickie Moore, Guy Kibbee, Bette Davis, Mac Madison, Hardie Albright, Alan Hale. Disappointing adaptation of Edna Ferber's saga of an orphaned girl who becomes a schoolteacher in the midst of a farming community and raises her son to aspire to big things. Abrupt continuity and sudden aging of its lead character keep this from amounting to very much. Stanwyck and Davis are both in the final scene--but never appear on screen together! Filmed before in 1925, remade in 1953.
