I can’t rave enough about his work. His treatment of the edges of the canvas with lines and shapes running off and on the edges of the canvas is spectacular. They made his compositions look larger because you can imagine shapes extending into the spaces beyond his canvas.

And that’s just one aspect of his paintings.

And when he became too invalid to stand and paint he went into his shape cutouts which just take my breath away! His works touched me on a profound level.

They have more than 1,000 works by him, thanks to the Cone Collection. If anyone ever visits Baltimore, DO NOT miss this great museum, once it reopens (Covid).

"The internationally renowned Cone Collection is the crown jewel of the BMA. In the early 20th century, Baltimore sisters Claribel and Etta Cone visited the Paris studios of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso and began amassing an exceptional collection of approximately 3,000 objects, including 500 works by Matisse, which were displayed in their Baltimore apartments prior to coming to the Museum." https://artbma.org/collections/cone.html
