May a non-artist friendly guest intrude for a bit? I promise this will be passing.

It's just that when I was young I flirted with art, flirted in the most superficial and brief way, and very soon recognized I am talentless, so we can all be grateful for that. But some things make an impression at certain moments of our lives and I propose here to post three times - being a couple of examples in each of the three.

Looking over what you true artists do here, please know I am in awe of your work and sincerely hope you won't be insulted by this thread, which will be *very* compartmentalized and finite and soon GONE.

This first post is of two cartoons: A Quixote by Jim BERRY, which I've looked for exhaustively and unsuccessfully on the net, but scanned from my scrapbook, and the other by Dik BROWNE of Hagar the Horrible, just for the saucy joy of it.

The second will be of two by the poet/artist/fantacist William BLAKE. And the third might be my own scribbles that led to my quitting.

In my childhood, my mother had a 3x5' reproduction of the Child in the Temple always just there. When I left home and they moved to another town, it just disappeared, and my sister was at the bottom of it, clearing things out. It wasn't until 30 some years later, piecing things of my life together that I asked her about it and she said she didn't know. It was only of the Jesus figure, and when I tracked it down it turned out to be a cropped version of the larger scene with the elders being taught to. Frustratingly, when I downloaded the whole thing and then cropped it to the single figure, my sister claimed that this was NOT the picture we had! She is non-visual, can't read maps, is passive aggressive. Anyway, I learned that it was the work of this Heinrich HOFMANN fellow who specialized in Christ subjects with many famous images.

At least these show why I realized that I'm no artist. Excuse: These are from when I was very young. Although, I'll say that a very credentialed art teacher was actually impressed with the picture of the face, since it was done with a magic marker, which she said is not easy!1

HooKAY, my apologies for dropping in, and to all of our great relief, no more of this!1 Best wishes.

They’re good! Both of them.

The face is a quick study of a face that’s stark in it’s rendition but that has a mysteriousness about it that draws your attention. It looks like sorrow. It’s emotional and it’s compelling. As the viewer you want to know more. It feels like there’s a story there.

#2 is fascinating and immediately strikes me as a unique vision of something about the human psyche. Perhaps the subconscious. The subject looks like it might be a depiction of your subconscious search or reaction because of the dark nondescript background, which makes the figures seem to be floating, though in a meaningful way. Or maybe it’s the same figure in different moments. It’s a puzzle you want to find the answer to.

You should come by often!

and the wrong ideas you’ve had, not the proof of the truth of what you do and are. It doesn’t matter that you haven’t produced artwork in years. You would find that out if you reclaimed yourself and your art.

Try it. You have nothing to lose except your erroneous idea that you aren’t artistic. It’s as simple as sitting down with your sharpie and some paper and beginning to doodle.

The shit you throw away is not what defines you. It’s the shit you reclaim that makes you who you really are.

being around more experienced artists.

Let me just say as an educator, I would never tell one of my kids they aren’t good at something. I say what needs work, but I also always point out what was successful. Much harder to do for ourselves, but I am trying. I let perfectionism chase me away from something I love decades ago, but I am back at it now.

I get a message saying there’s no subject line which isn’t true. I hope you’ve subscribed to this group for future displays of art.

Your art has haunted me for days. It has made me think and whether you believe it or not it has inspired me to continue to make my art mean something.

They show a lot of talent. I love how you simplified the values in the face and the complexity and emotion of the figures.
Please keep stopping in! And please don't let the fact that some of the people who post in this group have had years of experience and training intimidate you. Every single one of us started by making art that was less accomplished than these.
