ANIME NEWS: Odaiba to host science manga exhibition

An exhibition at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo's Odaiba district will explore whether the technologies presented in manga like “Astro Boy” and “Doraemon” are possible with current technologies.

The "Kagaku de Taiken suru Manga-ten" (Manga exhibition for scientific experience), which is being held to celebrate the 90th anniversary of publisher Shogakukan Inc., will split the venue into five areas, each devoted to a famous manga series.

The works featured will be Fujiko Fujio A's "Kaibutsu-kun" (The monster boy), Shotaro Ishinomori's "Cyborg 009," Osamu Tezuka's "Astro Boy," Fujiko F. Fujio's "Doraemon" and Fujio Akatsuka's "The Secret of Akkochan."

The exhibits are aimed at giving children the chance not only to experience but to understand cutting-edge technologies. For instance, exhibition goers will be able to play a game in the “Cyborg 009” area in which they can take down enemies using sound, while face-recognition technologies and proximity sensors will be incorporated into "The Secret of Akkochan" area. There will also be an augmented reality photography exhibit and a large-screen manga reader.
