I am a union activist who started the @NHLabor_News to push for progressive policies and fight back against the attack on working families.
Vote for Matt Murray - NH Labor News
My political story
I have always been active in my union which is very politically involved. I began working for campaigns in 2008, knocking on doors and calling fellow union members to GOTV! In 2010, the NH GOP walloped the NH Dems in the polls -- like most purple states that year-- and their new super-majority started right in attacking working families, pushing policies like Right To Work and Anti-Collective Bargaining bills. I started blogging about what Right To Work and these other anti-worker policies would mean to the people of New Hampshire and after a short while the NH Labor News was born. Since our humble beginnings the NH Labor News has grown to be a local political powerhouse helping to counter the Republican stream of mis-information that flows through our local media outlets. Along with the NH Labor News, I volunteer with campaigns, calling union members, knocking on doors, and standing at the polls. I also help unions and local candidates build a social media following by teaching them how to effectively use Twitter/Facebook and other social media accounts.
Why I deserve a Netroots Nation Scholarship
Attending Netroots Nation is an amazing learning experience but it can be expensive. All of my work in the NHLN is donated including the cost to build and run the website. As a father of three, I have to choose how and where to spend my money.
What first inspired me to get involved
As a union activist I felt our message was not reaching all of our members and the general public. The New Hampshire media tends to lean to the right and our message of progress was getting pushed aside. When the NH Legislature began pushing Right To Work for the um-teenth time, I started pushing back. I knew that social media was the future of messaging and that our local unions were not using it properly. I began blogging and building a strong following of labor and progressives to help me spread the word!
The blog post I am most proud of
There are so many post or events I helped to organize that I could point to but one of my favorite events was A Vigil for Tolerance, Acceptance and Welcoming. We organized a rally to welcome refugee children crossing the US Border to come to NH where they would be welcomed with open arms unlike the anti-immigrant rallies help be Right-Wing extremists in Arizona and California.
