HAMILTON In the midst of contract negotiations with the Mercer County Sheriff's Office, the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 140 launched a protest on Wednesday alleging tampering in upcoming union elections for superior officers.
FOP Lodge 140 members staged the protest outside the Mercer County Democratic Committee's convention on Wednesday, an effort to draw attention to alleged intimidation tactics by Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler and his office.
While they continue to negotiate a new contract with Mercer County, FOP Lodge 140 members are scheduled to vote April 2 to select a bargaining unit, including the possibility of switching to Policemen's Benevolent Association representation.
According to New Jersey FOP President Robert Fox, Kemler has interfered with the election which is organized by the state Public Employment Relations Commission in the hopes of the unit moving to PBA affiliation, which Fox said would make for easier contract negotiations.
