United Steelworker's most recent efforts to defend 450 members of USW Local 235A who have been out of work following Sherwin Alumina's Oct. 11 lockout include the launch of an online petition and the filing of an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board.
A statement released by Sherwin Alumina earlier today reads:
On Jan. 6, 2015, Sherwin Alumina was informed that the United Steel Workers (USW) filed an unfair labor practice charge (ULP) with the National Labor Relations Board Regional Office in Fort Worth. The allegations made are without merit and without any basis in law or fact, and Sherwin intends to defend the allegations vigorously.
Sherwin continues to be committed to bargaining in good faith with the union and reaching a fair contract. The proposal we have on the table will enable us to maintain the competitive benefits package offered to our employees, while also ensuring the long-term success of the plant.
