Free University for All is a Great Equalizer
Tonight Hillary Clinton said: I disagree with free college for everybody. . . . I dont think taxpayers should be paying to send Donald Trumps kids to go to college.
Yes, they should.
We could be so fortunate to have a small fraction of our taxes pay for our kids and Mr. Trump's to attend University together. Mr. Trump's small fraction would put several hundred or thousand kids through school for every one you and I paid for. His contribution would grow with each loophole we can close.
This would get us a good way down the road to a true meritocracy.
Hillary's plan sounds like one of those complicated plans typical of our government that would require a lot of overpaid administrators and allow insiders and their friends or clients to game the system for power and personal profit.

(937 posts)To qualify for free college in Sweden or Germany you must have graduated from a college preparatory upper secondary school called Gymnasieskola or in Germany they call them gymnasium. At the age of 12 it is decided who goes to college, only the top 25% of the elementary school academic achievers are allowed to attend Gymnasieskola or gymnasium schools.
To attend U.C. California tuition is $13,500 a year and a +4.0 GPA. Only those who attended the best high schools like S.F. Lowell High School or live in wealthy school districts would have the grades to qualify. U.C. California states that tuition is only 20% the total cost of going to college
(unless you commute and live at home).
I rather not see tax dollars used to pay for some doctor kid's 4 year college education

(14,733 posts)I just think it makes people better able to survive in modern life. It 'embetters' people, enables them, empowers them. It's the natural extension of free k-12. And I think ongoing free technical training in any field for adults is logical too. We shouldn't have to track down scholarships, fill out paperwork, jump through all sorts of hoops to 'qualify' for 'retraining programs'. We should be able to simply be able to go sign up for classes that teach us skills to make us more useful and productive citizens.
