How do I avoid smileys?

I've just had to edit a post because a reference to GDcolonP got formatted as GP .

Is there a way to avoid this - a verbatim tag, for example?

1. Use a space after the colon

GD: P ... not GD see

2. I seem to remember a "no smileys" option, alas it is no more.

That GD: P one commonly catches me often in jury duty.
