Boss's Day National Boss’s Day, also known as National Boss Day or Bosses Day, is a secular holiday that began in 1958. Patricia Bays Haroski was working as a secretary for State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Illinois when she registered “National Boss’s Day” with the United States Chamber of Commerce. October 16 was chosen as it was her father’s birthday. Patricia was working for her father at that time, making her father her boss.

Department Store Day Department stores have been around for many years and have been very instrumental in how we shop today. Many department stores had lunch counters where shoppers could take a break for a drink, snack or lunch. Some of them had large clocks in their entrances with seating for customers to relax and visit with each other. Many large department stores still exist today. They make it easy for us to shop with their multiple departments that carry everything from clothing to home products and tools.

National Liqueur Day A liqueur is an alcoholic beverage which is made from a distilled spirit that has been flavored with fruit, cream, herbs, spices, flowers or nuts and is then bottled with added sugar or other sweetener. Typically quite sweet, liqueurs are usually not aged long, however, there is a resting period during their production to allow the flavors to marry.

National Dictionary Day In 1806, American Noah Webster published his first dictionary,A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language. In 1807 Webster began compiling an expanded and fully comprehensive dictionary, An American Dictionary of the English Language; it took twenty-seven years to complete. To evaluate the etymology of words, Webster learned twenty-six languages, including Old English (Anglo-Saxon), German, Greek, Latin, Italian, Spanish, French, Hebrew, Arabic and Sanskrit.

2. I love those big old department stores. This one was the best:

I went into mourning when Kaufmann's closed. They had the most magical Christmas windows. I recently read that some of their artifacts are going into the Heinz History Museum in Pittsburgh.
