(43,554 posts)I know you're joking, but here's a story. 'Splain this:
I was having dinner at home with two very smart, accomplished men. Of course they are considerate enough to all pitch in with the dinner. I asked one (law degree, two M.S. degrees) to set the table. I told him where the placemats were.
When I came out from the kitchen, there was a different placemat for each place at the table. One dark blue one, a quilted one with flowers, and a straw mat one. Now obviously these do not go together. They were organized by set in a drawer.
How does one come to the conclusion that there should be three different placemats at the table?
I mean, it doesn't take very deep thinking to look at the drawer and take all three from one set. Or does it?

(41,086 posts)Husband and 2 adult sons who are all college educated and they would probably do the exact same thing you mentioned in your post with the placemats.
Now here is the question of the century. Why do otherwise intelligent grown men who have highly developed mechanical skills, who can do all manner of home repairs and car repairs
.
Replace an empty toilet paper roll like this

(13,185 posts)We opt to go with a single post, slip on same horizontal setup, only you slip the roll on the post. No mechanism necessary. One hand operation. Grab new roll, check orientation (over/under) slip on post.
That sums it up perfectly.
I read the rest of this thread and have an agreement with the OP. See below.

(23,118 posts)I think it's just a matter of paying attention to functionality vs. paying attention to appearances.
Some people care about functionality, some about appearances, and some about both.
I'm a little embarrassed to say that I probably would not notice any difference in the mismatched placemats, where many (probably most) people would.

(43,554 posts)Think about when you go over to a single man's house or apartment. You can just look at the place instantly and know there is no female influence.
I remember curtains in this one guy's place, someone I dated in college. I noticed the curtains and thought they were very pretty, especially being selected by a guy. When I tried to open them, though, I found they were stapled to the window frame.

It's kind of why I hate business travel these days; she's not there.
