that would be her work. Instead, she settles for knocking every object off of every surface when she has a grievance.

now that she is 11 years old. She taps my leg, or opens and closes a cupboard door repeatedly until I respond. But, if she is in a cranky mood, she goes back to knocking things down.

When Ember was just 3 months old, I came home from work one day to find her hopping and prancing around in delight with a strange looking white ceramic "toy." When I took it away to figure out what it was, she ran to the bedroom and came out with another one.

So I went into the bedroom and found my ceramic bedside lamp in dozens of pieces on the floor, along with the shattered light bulb. Ember was ecstatically picking up one "toy" after another like a child in a toy shop. I was horrified that she.might cut herself or swallow a piece. Immediately I started picking up the pieces, but Ember seemed to think that I was joining her in the fun. She tried to snatch pieces from my hand and flipped other pieces with her paw as if playing tiddly winks. All this time she was bouncing around happily.

I had to put her out of the bedroom and close the door in order to clean up the mess.

Then I reflected on how purely innocent she was in her adventurous, playful ignorance of harmful things. Just like a parent with a child, I regretted that she would have to lose that innocence for the sake of her own safety.
