My first guess was Seattle, but it's Montreal.

It's not funny, but I can't stop laughing. When we lived in MO, we had a garage where the entrance was on a downward slope. I literally spent 20 minutes in my Jeep--coming home from choir practice on a night when it started sleeting--trying not to slide into the side of the garage. Finally made it. The house had been built in 1924 and at some point the owners had installed a heating device under the asphalt in front of the garage. It would actually warm the asphalt enough to keep water from freezing on it. Sometimes. But it wasn't turned on!
