The Godfather was about power.
The Godfather Part II was about the price of power.
The Godfather Part III was about three hours long.

The first two are in my top ten best movies ever made. The third one was by comparison awful, and even without comparing it to the first two it was mediocre.

I loathe Mrs. Doubtfire.

Even though I love Ralph Fiennes. I'm not a fan of films that glorify adultery. She's married to Colin Firth and fancies a shag with Ralph Fiennes? Sew your wild oats when you're single. Geesh!

I felt the same way about Bridges of Madison County.

I didn't find The Exorcist scary because I don't believe in demons, possession and all that nonsense. Good special effects for the time though.

I thought it was a rather tender story about two people who were thrown together by fate and fell into a burning desire to be together forever. But they knew it was an impossible relationship and had to give up what they most desired in their lives. It was such a humanistic approach to a love story. Giving up what you most desire in your life is the most difficult decision a person can make.

40. I just believe in sowing your wild oats

when you're single. She'd been married to her husband for almost 20 years. I don't think it would be romantic for her to leave her husband for a traveling photographer she's known for a few days and I don't think it was especially tragic that she didn't.

42. She was a war bride, escaping the horrors of war and ending up in a remote farm in Iowa.

She knew nobody and was viewed as an outsider. She was lonely and never really loved her husband, altho she was grateful and stayed with him at the end. I view her as a tragic person, unhappy in her marriage but unable to just leave what she had as a family. I think it is a sad situation for everyone. Her husband is vaguely aware of her sadness and wants to help her but can't. Eastwood wants her to just up and go, and that is just insensitive on his part.

I think the film shows the tragic nature of the situation and highlights the kindness of her husband (he wants her to be happy).

Streep is such a fine actress she can play Francesca as a tragic, but basically a good and caring person who finds herself in an impossible situation. I felt sad for her. And for Eastwood's character and for her husband.

The movie is not romantic IMO. It simply shows that life is complicated and difficult. The tragedy is implicit in the situation these people faced and how they chose to deal with it.

Flag Day is a 2021 drama based on Jennifer Vogel's 2004 memoir, Flim-Flam Man: A True Family History.
It's directed by and stars Sean Penn.
His daughter, Dylan Penn, plays Jennifer Vogel.
It's an excellent film.

Absolutely hate Gone with the wind. While I admire the tech that was amazing for it's time, the movie was based on one of the few books that I feel should be banned/burned because it was so awful- poorly written, too long, awful characters, especially the main character, scarlet, scarletta, whatever her name is.

Current favorite movies are Coco and Encanto.

In the hatred category, The Last Jedi. As for the Rise of Skywalker, sure, I didn't like it. But after Rian Johnsons, if you can even call it a movie, that was probably the best they could do to salvage things. Should have done the Dallas swerve and Luke just wakes up from a bad dream and restart the saga.

Lord of the Rings trilogy was great, the Hobbit, they should have just paid Peter Jackson what he wanted.

Phoenician Scheme -- beautiful and fun

Shoplifters (2018) was one of the films that catalyzed the popular "found family" subgenre. I give extra points for degree of difficulty. There were so many ways this film could have gone wrong yet it didn't. Masterful tone:

Path to War (2002) was the final film directed by John Frankenheimer, who died seven weeks after it debuted on HBO. It's a very good movie, imo.

The Year of the Gun (1991) starred Sharon Stone, Andrew McCarthy, Valeria Golino, and was not a very good movie, IMHO.

45. True Grit (2010) vs True Grit (1969)

I loved the remake of True Grit (2010) -- directed by the Coen Brothers, was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, with Jeff Bridges playing Rooster Cogburn, Matt Damon playing Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, Josh Brolin as Tom Chaney, and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross.
It's a superb western IMHO and I highly recommend it.

In the original True Grit (1969), John Wayne won an Oscar for playing Rooster Cogburn,... Glen Campbell played the Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, and Kim Darby played Mattie Ross.
John Wayne was okay as the lead character, but I think Jeff Bridges did a better job playing Rooster Cogburn.
Matt Damon was much better playing Ranger LaBoeuf than Glen Campbell was (Good singer, bad actor, imo)
Hailee Steinfeld was outstanding as Mattie Ross, unlike Kim Darby who was just OK in that role.

46. Okay, one of each... maybe.

As an actor, I have always said that I will honor the performers and never leave a film no matter how bad it may be. I paid for it and this is my lesson, so to speak. (As a performer, I learn just as much from a bad one as from a good one.) So, with that in mind, here is one of my all time favorite movies. (Defined as one that I have watched many times and will do so whenever I get the chance)

I cannot stress how amazing this film is. Ridley Scott created a masterpiece that stands across genres. And, that cast!

Okay one more...

Classic Gilliam.

Now, as I said... I swore I would never leave a film. However, there was one that I almost left... it was damned close...

A pretty funny movie called "Stripes". I do not know what point the poster was making by quoting this film. Also, this is indeed a meaningless topic, which is why it appears in The DU Lounge. Nearly every discussion here is pointless, existing solely to provide recreation or solace to the group.

I suppose there may be meaning in that, now that I think about it.

53. I hate, hate, hate "Lord of War" with Nicolas Cage.

It's so fucking depressing & knowing it's real makes it even more so.

Surprisingly, "The Hunt for Red October" is one of my all time fave movies. I can watch it anytime & have probably memorized most of the dialog. "The hard part about playing chicken is knowing when to flinch." "I think when it gets confused, it kind of runs home to mama". "One ping only, Vasily." And I love the anthem the Russian soldiers sing before the sub goes silent. I read that the underwater scenes were actually filmed in a smokey room. They tried filming underwater but couldn't get the right affect & someone came up with the idea of a smokey room.

One dumb line in the movie.
Near the beginning, Alec Baldwin is on an airplane, and the stewardess suggests that he might want to take a nap.
He replies that he can't sleep because of "turbulence"
And she doesn't know what turbulence is......a stewardess who doesn't know what turbulence is?

It was a Sneak Preview, and the San Francisco theater was packed.
I got up and left as soon as I saw that Barbra Streisand was in it.
On my way out, I got several WTF looks from men in suits who may have been from Columbia Pictures, there to gauge the audience's reaction to the movie.
(I didn't much care for Barbra at the time, but I like her now)

70. There have been quite a few movies I have disliked

Some were just too silly, like Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Saturday the 14th, and Night of the Lepus (whose production costs were measured in carrots instead of dollars )

Any remake of a '60s cartoon or TV show (Bullwinkle, The Flintstones, Batman, The Wild Wild West, The Beverly Hillbillies, Alvin, etc)

Any movie that resembles a snuff film

And any movie where the bad guy wins. That includes a movie I really hated called Swordfish. The John Travolta character was annoying af, and letting him get away with stolen money when he should have been blown up in the helicopter was too much.

71. I tried watching 'I Love You, Man' on Netflix.

It's supposedly a comedy starring Paul Rudd, who's getting married and discovers he doesn't have a best man because he has no guy friends. So he sets out to find some guy friends and the movie frames this like it's some kind of problem except he leads an idyllic life and has no real problems. Paul Rudd's basically the friendliest guy who ever lived and the movie was stupid so I stopped watching it.
