(1,873 posts)I think my favorite this week is the little alien directing the actions of the human mechanism. Some days I feel so removed from the social norm around me that I feel like a part of my brain is just moving me around so I can appear to belong to the group.

(7,892 posts)My stove has a button under a clear plastic cover, andit's old enough that the protective cover over both the up and down buttons has cracked, and it's next tpimpossible to get either to budge. Unfortunately the same buttons are ised got oven temperature also - actually everything ehich can be set up or down. I haven't tried the back end of a wooden spoon yet, but thet's going to be my next step.

(186,611 posts)"Rocket Man (I Think It's Going To Be A Long, Long Time)"
She packed my bags last night, pre-flight
Zero hour: 9:00 AM
And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then
I miss the Earth so much, I miss my wife
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh, no, no, no
I'm a rocket man
Rocket man!
Burning out his fuse up here alone
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh, no, no, no
I'm a rocket man
Rocket man!
Burning out his fuse up here alone
Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact, it's cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise them if you did
And all the science, I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week
A rocket man
A rocket man
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh, no, no, no
I'm a rocket man
Rocket man!
Burning out his fuse up here alone
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh, no, no, no
I'm a rocket man
Rocket man!
Burning out his fuse up here alone
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time

My ear perceves then as rymes - or at leeast half-rhymes.

(7,892 posts)It is unusual to have a whole poem that has no exact rhymes, only half rhypmes, but they really are pretty common in English.
I can claim to be 1/8 Scottish through my father's mother, but the rest of me is German with a touch of English.
English poetry tends to use both rhyme and rhythm, but other languages don't necessarily use both, and some use neither. Haiku is not the only Japanese poetic form whic merely counts syllables. Ancient Hebrew poetry was basred on short stanzas of saying the same thing twice in different ways. Ancient Latin poertry never rhymed but was based on some very strict rhythms with thankfully some allowed exceptions. Classical Greek poetry didn't rhyme either. I really do think it is our differences which broaden our horizons.

(7,892 posts)(IIRC one involvong Odin, Thor, and a cellist) had a scene where som professors of music were tryinh to convince someone that, regardless of how one defined the words "too," "much", and "Mozart," there was no such thing as "too much Mozart." As you imply, the same is true of the words "too," "many," "cat," and "pictures."
