TIL Ohtani can speak English!

This is from Friday's World Series Victory Celebration.

I can see why he speaks through an interpreter: he's very shy - they had to drag him out in front of the crowd, laughing all the while, to make his speech - and he has a very thick accent.

I think the thing I like best about Ohtani isn't how unworldly good he is at baseball, but the sheer childlike joy he gets from his job. He always seems like he's thinking, "what do you mean they pay me to do this?"

Oh...I was listening to one of the post-game analysis shows on SiriusXM the day after the Series ended, and one of the commentators explained how much profit the Dodgers were making off him. Apparently three Asian airlines started sponsoring the Dodgers after he signed with them, plus they've got a lot of other endorsements because of him...Ohtani in a Dodgers uniform is netting the team $100 million in endorsements AFTER paying him the king's ransom that they are.

1. I couldn't care less who won the World Series, but I am very happy he got his ring.

The best player in baseball deserves a WS ring.

2. That's actually very common among athletes who are non-native English speakers.

They use interpreters when speaking to the media to avoid being misconstrued, even though their English is perfectly fine for communicating with teammates. Ichiro is a great example. He speaks fluent English but used an interpreter for interviews his entire career.
