(5,486 posts)Scale of this shocking disaster is unfathomable. Just glad I made many trips in recent years through Chimney Rock area along the Rocky Broad River enjoying all the hikes and sights including the new Strawberry Gap trail and the beautiful flowering bridge created by local voluneers but now destroyed above Lake Lure.
I've lived over 45 years in East Asheville less than a mile above the Swannanoa River but I haven't been able to bring myself to go near the river, both since the damage to roads and bridges makes travel more difficult and less accessible and because emotionally I'm not ready to deal with the impact of losing my favorite familiar places, some that are unrecognizable from the pictures and videos I've seen. Just glad that this past summer my spouse and I spent many more hours than ever before hiking and biking along both the Swannanoa, French Broad and Rocky Broad and enjoying our riverfront parks and nearby places such as the WNC Nature Center with their new young bobcats and cougars but now Nature Center is closed to to bridge destruction.
As of just this past weekend though all of our basic services except potable water are restored and I have made much progress removing debris and fixing damage to our house, so I will have a bit more time to get around the neighborhood and plan to walk down with a friend to check out the situation more down at the river. Compounding the exhausting struggles to survive with food, water and basic communication this past month, spouse hasn't been able to help due to recovering from stroke and broken ankle that occurred a week before the storm. I'm also grieving hurricane- related death of close friend and neighbor who was a mainstay of support but now gone.

(6,854 posts)I can't even begin to imagine dealing with all this just days after your spouse had a stroke and busted an ankle!!!!
How's your spouse doing now?
I'm so glad the two of you had such a great summer last year, enjoying your beautiful surroundings.
Any idea when you'll get your potable water back. There must be hundreds of miles of pipe to be replaced.
So sorry about the dear friend you lost.
